Plies - Definition of Real Album Review

Rating: 2.6 choppas out of 5 choppas

Plies' sophomore effort, while not horrible, is overall disappointing. While there are decent tracks throughout the album, there is no growth from his first album, which was somewhat novel in its brash bravado and anger. Definition of Real lacks the frank offensiveness that separates Plies from other rappers. Lyrically, not too much innovation or skill is expected out of Plies and true to expectations, he does not deliver any. Plies does not try to do too much with his lyrics, which prevents him from coming out looking like too much of an idiot. His straight forward approach is appealing for goons.
His flow and delivery on the album is quite good, but is not very unique. It cannot alone carry the album. In terms of content, Plies dropped the ball and missed the boat. He seems shy to preach to the goons and often turns to the ladies with vulgar bravado. Plies would be better off focusing on reaching all his goons and dawgs in prison (and all the suburban food court gangstaz who aspire to be goons.) However, he clearly did not get this memo. This leaves the album with a few good songs for what they are and a bunch of half assed collaborations with today's hot r and b artists. Plies refuses to allow other rappers to guest on his album, which hurts its ability to reach multiple segments of the rap listening population.
Highlights of the album include "Rich Folk" a lament about wanting to live like rich folks. Plies does demonstrate some depth when he raps about his seed's college plans: "Want my son to be the first one with a will/ Send him to college and pay it off fo fo year/ Let the streets be mad and tell him he ain't real." In addition, "Who Hotter Than Me," one of the album's single, works quite well because of Plies' simple bravado. He boasts with the best of them when the subject is realness and such, the supposed subject of the album. He raps: "Plies real, you preachin to the choiiiiiiir." This line, because of his simplicity works.
Definition of Real suffers because it does not do as promised. It doesn't define real as intended. Rather it flirts with real but does not seal the deal and take real home from the bar. Plies would be better off being as "real" as possible and let everything else fall into place. He softens up too much for the ladies on this effort.

The concept nerds refer as "Web 2.0," or the second generation of the internet, has been centered around communication and social network. Myspace, Facebook, Youtube, and a whole bunch more are prominent sites in Web 2.0. In addition, many other opportunities for human interaction over the web, which have existed for a while, have reached new importances. These include forums and message boards, chat rooms, and much much more. While we are often told not to trust people that we meet or interact with over the internet and that no one is who they pretend to be over the internet, there is a certain understanding that there is someone behind the internet profiles and opinions that we read.
This is where we have went wrong. What if the internet is not what it seems? Our current understanding of the internet portrays the web as an infinitely deep ocean of information and potential, with each user being a unique point in this ocean and all users being connected to one another by channels of communication that form a weblike structure. However, this might not be true. Instead, all of this 3 dimensional interactive hoopla could simply be a 2 dimensional picture created to trick the average internet user.
How do we know that when we believe we are interacting with real people over the internet, these real people are simply computer generated characters of sorts controlled by the man. The sophistication of computer programming and computing capabilities makes it completely possible that a computer could generate a convincing internet persona that posts coherent thoughts in colloquial way. This idea is difficult to explain because of the complexity of the construction behind it. Think about it like this: rather than connecting you to millions of people, the internet connects you to no one. Every internet interaction you have is with a super computer or government agents rather than real authentic civilians. This super computer creates responses and persona's that interact with you. The ideas of the computer are programmed or created by a team of agents. These agents use this system to push forward their own agendas.
Now, there are many arguments against this, the main one being when you interact with people you actually know online. This system in all likelihood does not apply to these forms of interaction, because there is no way for it to account for communication off the internet about what happens on the internet. However, any internet communication between two strangers could be controlled by this system. There is no reason that this is not the case. In reality, the readers of this blog are probably all just the same super computer perfectly calibrated to replicate normal human internet communication.
Oh well.

aight ima break it down for ya, but you gotta do some cash crate surveys for me if you get the job.

1) say that shit i said in my last post. emphasize your humble beginnings as a young jamaican boy from c heights. and how the poverty and struggle that you witnessed in the bk helped give you insight into how you can be successful in the financial fields. this is your strength.
for developments, say that you need to work on treating everyone fairly and equally and not being distracted by petty shit in striving for your overall goal.
2) again talk about what you came from. make sure you mix tangible achievement with more abstract ones (like prizes and wins and stuff with like improvements in your mental schemes and what not)
3)i don't know what the role is but say something like it is a great oppurtunity for personal betterment, helping people, helping the corporation. if its pressure fulled or has long hours or something say that the challenge presented by this is something that you are interested in conquering
4) if it's a female say something cocky about being high up in the company. if it's a male try to tie in some sweet recreation that might seem a little bad ass.
i'm not sure on this one, so you might have to ad lib like jeezy
5) google em and get some good facts and shit about your position and about how the bank ranks overall. make sure to ask good questions that don't seem to ignorant but allow the interviewer to talk. flipping the interview is a tried and true way of winning in an interview
6) quickly sum up your strengths and your perserverance etc.

Anyways, DJ Khaled's third album "We Global" is hitting the streetz/shelvez soon. How do you think it will stack up compared to "Listennn" and "We Da Best"

I am kinda over Plies and Wayne's new albums at this point, because neither lived up to its hype, so i'm excited to see what Khaled can put together.
He has quite a challenge tho, because he has to make tracks that set themselves apart from those on "We Da Best"
He needs to incorporate new artists, not just the Khaled classics (Wayne, Rick Ross, Trick Daddy, etc.) "Out Here Grindin" shows potential.
The key to Khaled's success is reaching out to various segments of the hip hop/rap listening population. He can do this by getting hipster rappers and backpack rappers on there too. If he can get Wale, Kidz in the Hall, or Cool Kids, he will do well. If not, he will fail.

I would say that he did. As I was reviewing some ol school TI, back when he was really good at making singles, I noticed that he seemed to be make various allusions to legal troubles. In "Rubberband Man" he raps about being a 7 time felon but not givin a fuck. Maybe he shoulda given a fuck, considering the fact that he just caught a charge. Also, in "U Don't Know Me" he raps about feds being at his shows and shit. These premonitions were not payed any mind tho and Tip Harris, despite getting off kinda easy for his army guns, will be doing a year in prison.
Props to TI tho for remaining relevant for as long as he did. His 10 or so certified street bangers is a lot more than most Southern rappers can claim.

Soulja Boy just signed someone to his record label/gang referred to as SODMG for short, or Stacks on Deck Money Gang for long. This someone is the Atlanta, Georgia dance crew turned rap group Show Stoppas whose hit record "Whoop Rico" ( no idea what that means) has the clubs and radios of teen dancas burnin up across the South. The song is a dance song in which Show Stoppas describes how good they dance.

Despite the fact that it is most clearly staged, this 12 minute clip of Big Show and Floyd Mayweather's recent anything goes wrestling bout will entertain. The sheer size difference between the two is impressive enough. The fight gets even better when it deteriorates into a series of low blows by Floyd Money Mayweather and his camp. Big Show once weighed in at 500 pounds and is 7 feet tall which is hard to imagine.

So here's what I have been listening to recently...

B.O.B.

I got a couple songs so far from dude, who is a rapper from the ATL. Both of them focus on the theme of haters and hating and how to cope with them. They both are strengthened by good guest performances from other Southern MC's.

B.O.B. ft Rick Ross and Juvenile "Haters" zshare

First off, the airy techno nature of the beat coupled with the Southern style drums works great and the beat itself would make a half decent song. B.O.B's lead off verse lyrically is not overwhelming; however, they way he switches up his flow is very interesting and makes it worth a listen. Both of the guest verses are not very noteworthy; however, the presence of Ross and Juvenile on the song gives B.O.B. some authenticity and certainly caught my eye. Without Ross on it, I probably wouldn't have dled this.

B.O.B. ft Lil Boosie and DG Yola "Fuck You" zshare

Again, the beat on this is crack. The simple piano progressions during the verses work well and the harmonica playing during the hook gives the song a melancholic, Southern feel, which fits the idea of the song well. Both B.O.B. and Boosie rap good verses. DG Yola sounds a little generic but he ends the song, so you can skip his verse if you like. The musical nature of the beat makes this song worth it even if the content is of no interest to you. The Boosie spot is a little interesting also because of the similar subject matter of some of Boosie's songs to those of B.O.B.. Alphabetically in my iTunes both Haterz and Fuck You were followed by Boosie songs (Hatin and Fuck You respectively) so there seems to be a connection between the two there.

The Game ft Ya Boy "Big Dreams" (BWS Remix) zshare

First off, Ya Boy slayed this song. "Big Dreams" is set to be the first single off the Game's next album "L.A.X." The sample on this is crazy and the beat is aight. Cool and Dre produced it and it sounds like a lot of their other shit. Lyrically, The Game keeps with the same style that gave him success earlier. He still raps about his whips and threatens to hurt people. In addition, his shoutouts and references of other artists continues. He shouts out Fat Joe and Curtis in the song. He raps about "curtis-ing" people. That part of the song doesn't make much sense. He mentions Ja Rule, Lil Wayne, etc. The stand out line of the song, at least for me was "I got blood diamonds from Angola." Really, it only stood out because it refers to such a politically charged subject as conflict diamonds. Still, he is bitin Fat Joe there who on one of the songs from Elephant in the Room said some shit like "Got conflict diamonds from Angola." Ya Boy's verse on the remix (no new Game verses on the remix) is a lot better than anything the game spits on the song. Highlights of it include "Honest yo, the past three years I been trying blow/But I refuse to give the Westcoast a hooked on phonics flow." Ya Boy's really tryna bring the west back. Game probably won't be able to do it, if he continues to follow the same somewhat tired formula. But hopefully Ya Boy got what it takes to do so.

Ross sold 198,000 according to the latest soundscan so props to him. Trilla is an overall solid album, despite being a little short. Ross has progressed some content wise and no longer raps about getting money grinding, but now raps about having money. The idea of the album is basically that Ross is rich as fuck and likes to rap about it. All the songs, except for the last two are basically about this. The last two "Reppin My City" and "I'm Only Human" are the required for a rap album songs shouting out a rapper's home city and reflecting on a rapper's life, respectively. The guest spots on the album really contribute a lot and help bring the album out of mediocrity. There are a few good classic Ross lines; however, it is the production and guest spots that make the album good. R Kelly and T Pain both contribute R and B hooks to "Speedin" and "Boss" respectively, which offer relief to Ross's relentless, booming flow. In addition, Jay-Z comes through to celebrate the benefits of being rich on "Maybach Music." The song is good without Jay-Z, because the beat fits Ross' flow wonderfully, but Jay-Z's contribution makes the song more appealing to a more general audience.
The best song on the album is probably "Luxury Tax" solely on the strength of Lil Wayne's guest verse, in which he describes how despite his lack of sports talent, he still balls. Ross's raps are not bad and his word play is good overall. Still, he really can only rap about money, getting money, dealing drugs, grinding, and what money brings, so the album gets a little redundant. Still, the production is wonderful and fits his style perfectly. The guest spots also offer the perfect interludes from Ross's raps. Overall, this makes the album a good solid overall album.

Since I have been slacking recently and I do not have one subject to write on, I'm just gonna throw out some random stuff I have found recently.
I was browsing Nah Right yesterday and found a bunch of good shit.

Firstly, Damian Marley "One Loaf of Bread" Video

This is no MTV video, but it serves its purpose wonderfully. The way that it portrays poor people's lives in Haiti and South Africa is very matter of fact and does not over glorify anything. The video footage from these two places perfectfully serves the video's purpose. The song is off the "Gang War" Riddim Album that came out last summer and was apparently slept on by me.

In general, I like rap music from the South, especially music with videos with rappers wearing tee-shirts featuring slogans. ("A Bay Bay" por exemple.) The following is no exception:

If anyone knows where I can get my hands on a "I'm So Decatur" shirt, please holla back. The expansive Southern sound on this song wins out. The video offers visual confirmation that I-20's lifestyle is enjoyable, yet they still came from the struggle. The formulaic nature of the video does not detract from it if you take it for what it is.

Young Jeezy - "Nicknames" ft Hella Flow

This is off the Young Jeezy Lost Tapes mixtape that came out recently. It continues in the tradition of rappers attempting to educate their listening base and make them smarter people and smarter movers of the white. (For more tracks like this, check out E-40's "Rules and Regulations")
In this track, Jeezy addresses the very important usage of nicknames as opposed to using real names when discussing movin dat yay. Good work Jeezy.

I don't know about you all but this video is pretty sweet. Its mad formulaic though. It reminds of all of the other dancehall gangsta videos i've seen before though. (Cham "Ghetto Story" anyone?)
Regardless, its a decent video to a pretty good song. Mavado is a grimey looking fucker, who probably really did do dirt, unlike many rappers today who just claim it. He looks like a combination of all the grimiest Wire characters. Dude's album was pretty solid, and you will like it if you are able to get past the usual dancehall intolerance bullshit.
Also, dude got a new song with Jay-Z that is tearin up the airwaves. Its audible crack rock.

Finally, I just got my copy of Trilla by Ricky Ross and it does not disappoint. Expect a review soon.

The Wire is over...

RIP to the best show on television...
Americas realest show is officially done after 5 seasons examining how the war on drugs affects inner city Baltimore. The show does so from various different, diverse standpoints, including from the eyes of the police, drug dealers, politicians, and more. It will be sorely missed from TV's and computers across the nation. If you haven't started watching, go rent the dvds and catch up.

Spoilers ahead...
The series finale itself was a bit unsettling in that it did not offer much resolution or hope for the future; however, it rang true to the Wire's commitment to realism. A fairytale ending it was not.
The point of the ending seems to be that the cycle continues with new players even when the older ones have retired, died, or moved on. Marlo's connect was successfully transfered back to Prop Joe's people, once Marlo retired from the game to become a business man. Duqie has turned to drugs and seems to be making to occupy Bubbs' recently given up drug addict role. And Michael seems to be the next Omar: "It's just a knee."

Apparently, Bermuda's resident white reggae singer Collie Buddz is a Giants fan as well. Collie's biggest hit thus far has been the weed anthem "Come Around." You may or may not have seen this video of Plies' certified goon music street banger "100 Years." In the song and video, Plies describes how the American justice system is flawed and unfair, especially to blacks. While some people make good points with out being racist or offensive in any way or ignorant, the vast majority of comments made are either racist attacks from both sides, ignorant rants about how rap music is bad, or big'ups of Plies. Yes, Plies is the realest rapper out there, but it gets a little old hearing that 10 times in a row. Youtube really is not the best place to have a debate on race in America, but it is happening there. I think it is best that you all go and look at the comments on your own and come to your own conclusions, but from my observations I have realized that the anonymity of the internet, despite being one of the internet's redeeming qualities, allows people to spew ignorance without consequences. It makes for entertaining content, but makes it impossible for any real debates to go on.

"Wit Papi" - This song is pure musical and cultural genius. It starts off by sampling Killa Season, Cam'ron's movie epic. This, alone, makes a great song. After the sample, from the scene in which Cam first gets cocaine to sell, Nyckz's punches begin. "Ima hustla, I could sell water to Poland Springs." Pure genius.
The hook of the song is also genius: "If I don't do it wit rap, I'm a do it wit papi." The genius lies in the double entendre in "do it wit papi." Initially, this appears to mean that Nyckz will do it with help from a Spanish dude referred to as papi (like Cam's connect in Killa Season) by dealing drugs and shit. This was Nyckz original intent. However, there is more to this line. Papi sounds extremely similar to Poppy. Poppy, according to wikipedia:

"The opium poppy, Papaver somniferum, is the type of poppy from which opium and all refined opiates such as morphine, thebaine, codeine, papaverine, and noscapine are extracted. The binomial name means, loosely, the "sleep-bringing poppy", referring to its narcotic properties."

Therefore, not only does Nyckz refer to his connect wit the papi line, but he also refers to the plant that such drugs as codeine and opium come from. This botanical knowledge should not go unnoticed. Codeine is an essential ingredient in lean, therefore he is able to reach out to the entire Houston area. I think that it is a pretty accurate description despite the fact that for many e thugging is a hobby and is not a lifestyle. However, other than that, he relatively accurately describes e-thuggery. However, he is not on the top of his e-thugging game. I have found that "ima kill you"/"ima kick yo ass" shit is a little passé. E-thugs up on their game now resort to more colorful insults like "kill yo self" or something along those lines. My personal favorite that I use the most often is "Find a tall building and see if you can fly." In addition, adding colorful adjectives and pop culture references add breadth and severity to e-thuggin attacks. I understand that the lack of context in that video limited the ability to make funny attacks. Still, I would expect better. I support this and find it entertaining, nonetheless.

ation of Hip Hop is a rap and lifestyle discussion forum, where members can check out the latest in rap music and more and discuss whatever is on their mind. The site was started by Memphis, though it owes much of its development to a core group of members. For the most part, these members were all originally members at another rap site of the same type, where censorship and leaching raged freely.
Originally, these members congregated at Bleed Anime, an anime message board started by Memphis. Many of the O.G. members made Bleed Anime their home after changes on the 3rd Biggest Rap forum were made and a corrupt young man from Washington State was allowed to reign free. Corruption, censorship, and oppression of ideas caused these members to leave to seek e-freedom. This was obtained at Bleed Anime.
However, Bleed Anime ran into various roadblocks. First, relatively successful spamming recruitment raids failed and an e snitch from Anime Chat caught feelings and snitched to the site's host. Bleed Anime was started again, but had to rebuild from square one. After BA had regained most of its members and content as before, disaster struck again. A corrupt mod/hacker attacked and deleted all the site's info.
After the second disaster on BA, the core group of members congregated on Mad Omars, as they had in the past. Since most of the members were rap fans, not anime fans, it was decided that a rap forum would be created. That's how Nation of Hip Hop was born.
The site started off slowly but surely and quickly began to gain members. The core group from BA was joined by various converts from some of the worse rap forums out there, especially the 12th largest. However, many of these members turned bitch and returned back to the old site. These included Chubs aka STRESS and 5*General.
Currently, NOHH has serious e-beef with Real Rap Talk (the original home of many of this site's OG members) because of RRT's corrupt, stupid moderating staff and large amount of leachers. This beef is bolstered by various raids on each site by members of the other. NOHH invariably wins these raids because of its more intelligent group of members.
1000 members was reached early in December and 2000 should be soon to come.
In summation, they mad cuz we stylin on em.

Fuck it, they really should make a feature length film about getting illegal money. While this is nowhere on the level of this story, its a perfect example of how the internet is funny and its users don't shy away from hatred in the form of repeated insults. Earlier this week, members of Real Rap Talk decided to take their pre-Thanksgiving aggressions out on S.T.R.E.S.S., a moderator of the site, whose bragging about being a real life thug and going to the bar, coupled with his posting pictures of his portly self online, has made him a hated figure. After deleting/closing various threads, he attracted the wrath of some of the internet's funniest and most hating users. The ethering of S.T.R.E.S.S. grew as various youngsters wanted to jump in and show off how well they could insult a fat guy. This common phenomenon of "snowball ethering" has been present in the past, most notably in the case of Kevin, a young man, who also posted his picture on the net, and after becoming abusive as a moderator of the same rap forum mentioned above, unleashed a tirade of attacks on himself.

Morals of the story:

Not to sound too much like a parent or teacher, don't post personal information or your picture on the internet, unless you want to suffer constant verbal abuse, or unless you are a triple OG internet gangsta who can back up what he has to say with e-gunshots (internet gunshots, not real life. Real life violence over things that occur on the internet is never condoned.)
Kids these days love to ether, make yourself ether proof.
E-Thugs need to respect the OG's, (Don't get it twisted, S.T.R.E.S.S. is not an OG and never will be.)

Since they are rap beefing right now, exchanging diss tracks and such, I thought I would speak on it.
Aight, so a little background: Mistah F.A.B. bodied Royce in a battle in New York a while back:

Fabby mentioned his bodying of Royce in various interviews and what not, and Royce caught feelings, apparently because he's a bitch, and mentioned Fabby in his freestyle over the Blue Magic Beat. (Check end of the post for mp3's) Royce:
"Tell Mistah F.A.B. get his cash when he wakes up"
Fabby responded with a diss record in which he thoroughly ethers Royce. Fabby does mention the late Proof's name in the diss. Mentioning a dead rapper's name was probably not the most classy move and it triggered a reaction from Royce, who responded with "Who Got Bodied?" dissing Fabby.

Royce tried, but he clearly lost. In the battle he was clearly murdered. He really should have left it at that. Fabby's first diss was clearly superior to Royce's "Who Got Bodied" response. It seems that Royce really does not understand the Bay or where Fab's coming from. The whole Fillmore Dyke shit doesn't really make sense, because Fab's from Oakland not San Francisco. Royce goes on to say he knows DJ Skee and therefore has love for the Bay. Skee's a LA dj, not a Bay one.
Royce's freestylin over the "Duffle Bag Boy" beat sounds suspiciously like Ransom's "Duffle Bag Boy" freestyle. They both recommend that their rivals start running. Smh, Royce shouldn't be biting liiiiiiiiiines.
Royce da 5 9 has a Napoleon complex. He's short and insecure, so he goes at artists who are superior to him.

After going head to head in a lyrical battle, Royce da 5'9" and Mistah F.A.B.'s war of words eventually spilled out of the battle arena and onto wax. SOHH caught up with both MC's to get to the bottom of the beef.

After trading verses in front of a large crowd in a battle hosted by Fat Man Scoop, many came to the conclusion that Bay Area MC Mistah F.A.B. got the best of Royce in their verbal sparring session, which eventually led to the two trading jabs on record. SOHH spoke with Nickel Nine to get his interpretation of the battle's outcome and the tension that followed.

"It's not a beef and it wasn't really a battle," Royce told SOHH. " What I was told was that it was gonna be like a cipher, that's why you see me just spitting verses like I was on the footage. That's what was told to me by the guys who put the thing on to get me to come there. If I had known I probably would have said no because that's not where I'm at in my career. But he did good, I give him his props."

But Royce also explained that the battle has nothing to do with the tension between the two, instead he took issue with what he felt was F.A.B. talking reckless in the media afterwards.

"It's how he handled it after the fact," he said. "He started saying a lot of stuff in the press like, 'I wanted to go at Royce but they said not to because he just got out of jail and he's going through a divorce and he just got out of rehab,' which wasn't the case. That kinda irritated me."

Royce also feels that F.A.B is only using the situation to boost his career and that his gripe isn't legit.

"He's young and he doesn't realize that rap is a full contact sport and that you'll hear people call out your name," Royce explained. "I just think he saw this as an opportunity to build a buzz. If it was beef nobody would be saying nothing, it'd be a problem."

F.A.B. disagrees with Royce, saying that he didn't perpetuate the situation and instead tried to be diplomatic until he heard Royce mention him in a song.

"After it was over, I thought it was over," F.A.B. told SOHH. "When the media came to me about me winning the battle I was like 'I don't think he[Royce] was really into it' Royce is a hot rapper. I respect him. He taught Eminem how to rap and if he taught one of my favorite rappers how to rap, I can respect him. So when I heard the @#!* he said about me on the song, I was like wow. Me being where I'm from, we don't even do the [battle] rap thing like that. You don't say a ni**a name on a song. You don't speak on me like that."

F.A.B. also disputes that he's using the situation strictly to get a buzz.

"Propel my career? Ni**a, I'm already doing me. Is it gaining me nationwide notoriety? Yeah, 'cause that's what motherfu**ers wanna talk about. But my career is not gonna be 'the guy who battled Royce 5'9" Win or lose, I still win."

Though the two have traded jabs on wax, both agree that the issue is strictly in rhyme and both have offered to dead the beef.

"I want fans to know that I don't have a problem with him," said F.A.B. "If you wanna call Royce right now it'll be over. I won't say anything else."

In related news, both MCs have projects in the works. Royce is gearing up to release his "Bar Exam 2" mixtape in the coming weeks, which will serve as an appetizer to his two new albums, one of which will be executive produced by DJ Premier, which he says will be released in 2008. Mistah F.A.B. is also preparing to release two new projects, a collaborative album with producer The Alchemist entitled Golden State Warrior as well as his major label effort The Yellow Bus Ridah on Atlantic, which is said to feature Rick Ross, Snoop Dogg, Capone-N-Noreagea and Chamillionaire.

Fabby's album gonna be sick considering those features, can't wait for YBR

Supposedly, Rich Boy also personally funded this video.

I don't really like Soulja Boy anymore since he blew up and got all white bread. I was feeling his shit back in the day when he was still a myspace sensation. Anyways, here he comes with some cupcakin music and a cupcakin video. Fo real, Soulja Boy needs to stick to high paced dance music, cuz this shit's whack. Its interesting though to examine thematically Soulja Boy's post record deal videos, because they closely resemble each other. One similarity between this video and "Crank Dat" is the prevalence of computers. I respect this decision, because it shows that Soulja Boy knows how he made it big (off the internet) and embraces that. The album title, of course, also embraces this.
